About this information
This data is derived from your IP address using geolocation databases. Location accuracy varies - city-level data may be approximate. If you're using a VPN, proxy, or Tor, the location shown will be that of your exit node. For accurate lookup of any IP address, use our IP Address Lookup tool.
What is an IP address?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical identifier assigned to every device connected to the internet. Think of it as your device’s mailing address on the web -it tells other computers where to send data so it reaches you.
Every time you visit a website, send an email, or stream a video, your IP address is used to route that data to and from your device.
IPv4 vs IPv6
There are two versions of IP addresses in use today:
IPv4 addresses look like 192.168.1.1 -four numbers separated by dots, each ranging from 0 to 255. This format provides about 4.3 billion unique addresses, which seemed like plenty in the 1980s but is now insufficient for the number of devices online.
IPv6 addresses look like 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 -eight groups of hexadecimal numbers. This format provides approximately 340 undecillion addresses (that’s 340 followed by 36 zeros), enough for every grain of sand on Earth to have its own IP address.
Public vs private IP addresses
Your public IP address is what the rest of the internet sees. It’s assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and identifies your network to the outside world. This is the address shown in the tool above.
Your private IP address is used within your local network (home or office). Devices on your network use private addresses like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x to communicate with each other, while your router handles translation to your public IP for external communication.
Why does your IP address matter?
Your IP address can reveal:
- Your approximate location - typically accurate to the city level
- Your ISP - the company providing your internet connection
- Your connection type - residential, business, mobile, or VPN
This information is used legitimately for content delivery, fraud prevention, and regional content licensing. However, it’s also why privacy-conscious users often use VPNs to mask their true IP address.
How this tool works
This tool is powered by a QuantCDN Edge Function running at the edge location nearest to you. When you load this page, the edge function reads your IP address from the incoming request headers and displays it -no data is stored or logged.
